Description

Auckland City Hospital is New Zealand's largest public hospital and clinical research facility.  As one of the leading public healthcare providers in the country, it is committed to excellence in patient care, research, training, and community service.

The hospital brings together the services of Greenlane Clinical Centre and the National Women's Hospital into one building, and links with Starship Children's Hospital.

These services combined make the Auckland District Health Board the largest trainer of doctors in New Zealand, with approximately 1,477 medical staff.

Auckland City Hospital has the largest elective surgery delivery system in the country with 23,000 patient discharges every year.  Conversely, the hospital undertakes an average of 30,000 acute surgical discharges and 66,000 acute medical and rehabilitation discharges every year.

Some of the specialist services provided by the Auckland City Hospital for the whole of New Zealand are:

  • Organ transplants (heart, lung, and liver)
  • Acute major airway obstruction transferred for laser or stent placement
  • Massive haemoptysis surgery
  • Hepatic surgery
  • Specialist paediatric services
  • Epilepsy surgery
  • Deep brain stimulation
  • High-risk obstetrics
  • Intensive care

The new Auckland City Hospital is nine levels high and around 80,000sq metres. It is one of New Zealand's largest public buildings.

The architects have designed a building which ensures that all the wards have access to natural light. The final design is an 'H' shape and has a very large internal courtyard which is flooded with natural light.

There is also a glassed atrium linked between the existing Auckland Hospital building (now known as the Support Building) and the new Auckland City Hospital.

The interior of the new Auckland City Hospital is not the usual clinical hospital ambience the public may be used to. The use of warm colours and fabrics ensure a welcoming environment for patients and visitors.

All Auckland District Health Board facilities are smoke free.

Visiting Hours

Family and visitors are important when people are unwell or getting better, and so is rest.

For most wards visiting hours are from 11am to 8pm, with patients' rest hours between 1pm to 3pm.

We recommend two visitors at a time at the bedside.

To visit outside of these times or for longer or for greater numbers of visitors, please talk to the Charge Nurse or Midwife on the ward or unit. If visiting after 8pm, visitors must report to Security at the reception desk on Level 5.

Family/whanau rooms are available on each ward. We ask that visitors are considerate of other patients and keep noise levels low when visiting and supervise children at all times.

People who are unwell should refrain from visiting until they are better, to help prevent bugs spreading around the hospital.
