Description

What is Sexual Health Medicine?
Sexual Health Medicine includes: the testing, treatment and management of sexually transmitted infections; genital dermatology and other skin related problems; genital pain problems.  It also includes reproductive health including contraception and sexual assault care.

Not all sexual health clinics provide all of these services.  In Wellington, contraception services are provided by other practitioners such as Family Planning and local GPs.

Other areas of expertise include the sexual health of: adolescents, sex workers, gay and lesbian, transgender and prison populations, and Maori and Polynesian and other ethnic groups. In addition, the Cuba Street Clinic is home to the regional Sexual Assault Assessment & Treatment Service (SAATS).

Charges

The services provided by the Wellington Sexual Health Service (WSHS) and its outreach sites are free of charge to all individuals.  Most medications are also provided free of charge.

Many community GPs, student health services and youth services in the Wellington, Hutt, Kapiti and Wairarapa areas are funded to provide free sexual health services to select groups or individuals.  These doctors and nurses attend trainings in sexual health, provided by the specialist service and keep up to date on the diagnosis and treatment of routine STIs.

To find a GP who provides free STI services, call your GP's office or the WSHS to find a local GP who is registered to provide free sexual health services.
