Description

We are a partnership of two optometrists, Kerry Atkinson and Graham Kearney. We have worked together for about 30 years now.

There have been Atkinsons working at Otahuhu since about World War 1, when James Atkinson was a clockmaker with premises in the main street. He was also Mayor of Otahuhu. Harry Atkinson set up practice in Otahuhu in the early 1940s, working from the same site that had been the original Atkinson's premises. That building was replaced with another in 1970.

Graham went to work in Otahuhu with Harry Atkinson in the 1970s. He did clinical teaching in the Department of Optometry, University of Auckland. He has a BSc and extra qualifications in the use of diagnostic drops.

Kerry went from New Zealand to England to qualify and to specialise in contact lens work and came back to New Zealand to work with Harry Atkinson and Graham Kearney. He also did clinical teaching at the University of Auckland Department of Optometry and lectured in contact lens practice. He completed a BSc and then did a therapeutic qualification which enables him to treat diseases of the anterior eye with eye drops.

What are we good at?

  • Excellent clinical care for all age groups.
  • We do therapeutic treatment with eye drops of the anterior segment of the eye (excluding the treatment of glaucoma).
  • Examination of children / Examination and prescribing for young children / Children's vision.
  • Examination and prescribing for the elderly.
  • Advice and prescribing devices for treating low vision.
  • Problem solving of eye problems with RGP contact lenses. For example keratoconus, post corneal graft fittings, referrals from Greenlane Clinical Centre for keratoconic fittings and care.
  • Shared care in glaucoma, post cataract care, post-Lasik care.
  • We solicit referrals from GPs for eye treatment.
