About The Organisation

The Hearing House enables deaf and hearing impaired children to listen and speak.

Today, thanks to scientific advances in hearing aids and the development of cochlear implants, even children who are profoundly deaf can have access to sound and can learn to listen and speak. However, early intervention is critical so that the brain doesn't shut down the neural pathways that enable us to hear.

Using an advanced and specialised therapy called Auditory-Verbal Therapy, The Hearing House teaches deaf and hearing impaired children to speak clearly and naturally like their hearing peers and we aim for children to attend mainstream school by age five. We also provide paediatric audiology services, a preschool (for both hearing impaired and community children), parent support groups, a transition to school programme and outreach services for the wider northern region.

The Hearing House is a centre for parents and children where all services are available at one location , and is considered New Zealand’s first centre of excellence in habilitation for children with significant hearing loss.
