Publications

The Centre for Youth Health collaborates with other researchers in a range of relevant adolescent health research projects.  Below is a list of publications the Centre for Youth staff have available:

  • Successful School Health Services for Adolescents - Best Practice Review
This review identifies current best practice in providing healthcare for adolescents in a school setting. It is based on available literature in 2005, for Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. In addition, local youth health providers and stakeholders have provided guidance and input.
  • Outside the Mainstream
Teenagers who are under 16 years old and are outside mainstream educational settings are at increased risk of multiple problems including suicide attempts, early parenthood, substance abuse, problem behaviour and poor educational achievement. Yet, these young people typically have less access to health services than teens at school.
  • Why Youth Health?
Young people face significant threats to their health and wellbeing. Accompanying the transition from childhood to adulthood are emerging health issues arising from the risk taking and experimentation that are a normal part of growing up.
  • Youth Health Standards
The purpose of these standards is to improve the health and wellbeing of young people by:
    •  establishing a nationally-agreed set of standards for youth health service delivery as determined by literature best practice recommendations, and consultation with providers in the youth health sector Aotearoa New Zealand
    • identifying a range of common acceptable solutions that meet the standards while providing safe services.
  • Executive Summary - Healthy Youth Development: a Review of Effective Programs and Approaches
The accompanying report examines the evidence around what works to improve the health and wellbeing of young people in New Zealand. Based upon systematic reviews of current evidence, the report examines the components of effective interventions that address common youth health concerns.
  • Healthy Youth Development: a Review of Effective Programs and Approaches
This full report documents ‘what works’ to help young people make the transition to adulthood and prevent the poor outcomes associated with emotional, behavioural and other health concerns. Based on a systematic review of evidence-based literature reviews, this report identifies effective programs to improve the health and wellbeing of young people. This report is divided into two sections: evaluations of interventions to prevent youth health problems and synthesis of the critical elements of successful interventions. Case studies are provided throughout to highlight examples of effective programs.
