Starship Paediatric Infectious Diseases Service

Description

The Infectious Diseases Service provides care for children with complex, severe or chronic infectious diseases such as bacterial meningitis, tuberculosis, HIV, newborn infections and rheumatic fever.

The service has an important liaison role with Public Health, Microbiology and Infection Control services. It also provides management and co-ordination for regional children's tuberculosis, HIV and rheumatic fever services.

A national consultation service is provided for paediatricians, other specialist paediatric services, hospitals and policy makers.

Referral Expectations

Children are referred to the Infectious Diseases outpatient clinics by their primary care doctor (GP) or specialist for the treatment of persistent or recurrent infections, immunisation issues, tuberculosis, travel and immigrant health.

An inpatient service is also provided within Starship Children's Health for those children who require a stay in hospital.
