Auckland's new acute adult hospital on the Auckland District Health Board's Grafton site opened in October 2003.
It brings together the services of Auckland, Green Lane and National Women's Hospitals into one building, and links with Starship Children's Health. This represents a fundamental reorganisation of the Auckland District Health Board's staff and services. See separate listings for Starship Children's Health and Greenlane Clinical Centre.
The new Auckland City Hospital is nine levels high, which is five levels lower than the existing Auckland Hospital building. At around 80,000sq metres, it is one of New Zealand's largest public buildings.
The architects have designed a building which ensures that all the wards have access to natural light. The final design is an 'H' shape and has a very large internal courtyard which is flooded with natural light.
There is also a glassed atrium linked between the existing Auckland Hospital building (now known as the Support Building) and the new Auckland City Hospital.
The interior of the new Auckland City Hospital is not the usual clinical hospital ambience the public may be used to. The use of warm colours and fabrics ensure a welcoming environment for patients and visitors.
All Auckland District Health Board facilities are smoke free.

Whanau/family and visitors are important when people are unwell or getting better, and so is rest.
For most wards visiting hours are from 11am to 8pm, with patients' rest hours between 1pm to 3pm.
We recommend two visitors at a time at the bedside.
To visit outside of these times or for longer or for greater numbers of visitors, please talk to the Charge Nurse or Midwife on the ward or unit. If visiting after 8pm, visitors must report to Security at the reception desk on Level 5.
Whanau/family rooms are available on each ward. We ask that visitors are considerate of other patients and keep noise levels low when visiting and supervise children at all times.
Unwell visitors or children should refrain from visiting.
