"Whirinaki" (meaning to support) is the CMDHB Mental Health facility located in East Tamaki and providing dedicated mental health services to children, adolescents and young adults.
At Whirinaki there are two distinct mental health services that currently operate from this facility:
Whirinaki Child and Adolescent Mental Health
This is a community based service for children and young people between the ages of 0-19 years with serious emotional, psychological or behavioural disturbance, suspected psychiatric illness or serious mental illness.
Our staff are all based on one site. We see clients on site, at a number of satellite clinics, at schools, community venues and at home. We currently have five multidisciplinary teams - a child team, two youth teams, a Maaori clinical team (He Kaakano) and a Pacific youth clinical team (Vaka Toa).
Therapeutic interventions include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), family therapy, parenting groups (Incredible Years), social skills groups, Therapeutic Storytelling Intervention (TSI) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). We support creativity and innovation in interventions and work closely with the client's and family's wider systems including schools, community, church and extended family.
Our multidisciplinary team includes:
- Psychiatrists
- Developmental paediatricians
- Youth health specialist
- Nurses
- Occupational therapists
- Psychologists
- Social workers
- Family therapists
- Psychotherapists
Early Psychosis Intervention Team (EPIT)
A comprehensive clinical service for young adults (18-30) who are experiencing psychotic symptoms for the first time.
Mental Health occupies the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. The facility includes 12 interview rooms and accommodation for up to 80 staff as well as a meeting room / seminar area. The site is beautifully landscaped and includes a generous number of car parks.
