Whirinaki Child and Adolescent Mental Health

8.00am - 5.00pm Monday to Friday

Description

Whirinaki Child and Adolescent Mental Health is a community based service for children and young people between the ages of 0-19 years with serious emotional, psychological or behavioural disturbance, suspected psychiatric illness or serious mental illness.  

Our staff are all based on one site.  We see clients on site, at a number of satellite clinics, at schools, community venues and at home.  We currently have five multidisciplinary teams - child team, two youth teams, a Maori clinical team (He Kaakano) and a Pacific youth clinical team (Vaka Toa).

Therapeutic interventions include:
  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
  • Family therapy
  • Parenting groups (Incredible Years)
  • Social skills groups
  • Therapeutic Storytelling Intervention (TSI)
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

We support creativity and innovation in interventions and work closely with the client's and family's wider systems including schools, community, church and extended family.

Our multidisciplinary team includes:

  • Psychiatrists
  • Developmental paediatricians
  • Youth health specialist
  • Nurses
  • Occupational therapists
  • Psychologists
  • Social workers
  • Family therapists
  • Psychotherapists

Exclusions to this service include mental health issues resulting solely from: intellectual disability, conduct disorder, alcohol and drug dependence. Priority is given to those children/young people with the most severe and acute problems and their family/whanau.

Referral Expectations

Access to this service is by referral from your GP, School Counsellor or other health professional.

Charges

There is no charge for this service for New Zealand residents.
