Coma
Coma or loss of consciousness may be caused by many things such as drugs, injury, bleeding in the brain, brain infection, seizures, or by sedation and anaesthesia given as part of treatment for other conditions. As well as specific treatments for the underlying causes, comatose patients in intensive care usually require a breathing tube and mechanical assistance with breathing, and often a tracheostomy. Other care of the comatose patient includes feeding through a stomach tube, regular turning to avoid pressure damage to the skin, and care for the bladder and bowels.
