Dr Paul Owen - Geriatrician & Specialist Physician

Description

What is a Geriatrician?

Geriatricians are specialist doctors who are trained in the conditions that commonly affect older people as well as how the aging body’s needs change with respect to all illnesses.

The patients Dr Owen treats are generally older frail people with complex medical conditions.  Dr Owen's goal is to make adjustments to medical therapies and recommendations to improve the patients wellbeing and overall quality of life.

Dr Owen is available for home visits, for those elderly patients too frail to travel.

What is a Specialist Physician?

Specialist physicians are doctors who have trained in various specialties such as diseases of the heart, lungs, brain and other organs. Often people have more than one part of the body involved in an illness or the exact cause of symptoms is not clear.  The Specialist Physician is an expert in diagnosing what is wrong and managing illnesses that are complex.

Referral Expectations

Your GP will refer you to Dr Owen if they feel you would benefit from a specialist doctor’s advice regarding your medical condition.

During the appointment you will be asked about any symptoms you have as well as your past medical history and what medications you are on.
You may be asked a series of questions to test your memory.
Part of history-taking includes asking questions about who you live with or what support you have.

Dr Owen will then examine you. He will explain to you the reason for the examination and then what tests or treatments are coming. You and your family can ask questions at any time during this assessment.
