Tamaki Oranga Mental Health Service

Description

Tamaki Oranga is a minimally-secure hospital for men living with the effects of severe mental illness.  Although we are a hospital, our focus is on rehabilitation and community integration.  Our aim is to support you and your family/whanau in the best possible way to meet your recovery goals and to help you take the necessary steps to move safely back into the community.  An average stay at Tamaki Oranga is around 18 months, however the timeframe may be longer or shorter depending on your individual needs.

  • The team is committed to standards of excellence, delivery of care and providing the most current treatment for each individual.
  • The team will assist and support each client in an individual plan of recovery.
    All goals will be based on individual needs in consultation with individual clients.

Referral Expectations

Referrals to Tamaki Oranga can be made through both Community and Inpatient Mental Health Services within the Auckland Region.  Self-referrals and referrals from General Practitioners cannot be accepted. 
 
Patients at Tamaki Oranga are subject to the Mental Health Act. 
 
Tamaki Oranga provides a service to men with severe mental illness who have experienced severe difficulties living in the community as a result of ongoing mood or psychotic symptoms, alcohol and drug problems or other disabling conditions such as head injury or intellectual disability.  Men referred to Tamaki Oranga usually have a history of high use of acute inpatient / respite services or have not benefited from assertive community interventions.  Tamaki Oranga is not a forensic service nor does it provide a service to those men who need a high degree of security to manage risk.

Visiting Hours

Monday to Friday: 5.30pm to 8.00pm
Weekends & Public Holidays: 9.00am to 8.00pm
Other times available at the discretion of the senior nurse on duty.
