Waitemata DHB Paediatrics & Newborn Services
Our services operate from sites at North Shore Hospital and Waitakere Hospital and include:
Paediatric Outpatient Clinics - Waitakere and North Shore
If your child needs to visit a specialist children’s doctor your family doctor may refer them to the general paediatric outpatient clinic. Children are prioritised according to information given by your general practitioner in the referral.
Please bring “Well Child Tamariki Ora – Health Book” and any other relevant information with you when you come to clinic.
• In West Auckland the clinics are held in Outpatients at Waitakere Hospital.
• In North Shore, paediatric clinics are held at the Pupuke Building, North Shore Hospital; Hibiscus Coast; and Te Puna Marae.
Special Care Baby Units (SCBU) – Waitakere and North Shore
Specialist care for babies who are born early or become unwell.
The neonatal units at North Shore Hospital and Waitakere Hospital care for sick babies and premature infants. Deliveries before 32 weeks' gestation would normally be delivered at Auckland City Hospital. While in Special Care, a paediatrician is in charge of baby's care in the nursery. The nurses in the Special Care Nursery all have training and experience in the care of sick babies.
If your baby is very premature and if he/she needs the assistance of a ventilator (breathing machine), he/she will be transferred for care at a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) such as at Auckland City Hospital.
Rangitira Children’s Ward (Waitakere Hospital)
If your child is sick and needs hospital assessment and care.
Rangitira Paediatric Ward is a children’s medical ward for children aged 0-14 years who are referred by GPs and emergency doctors for medical care. Rangitira Ward is staffed by paediatricians and children’s nurses to deliver excellent local care for our Waitemata children. Children with surgical or orthopaedic problems should still be referred by doctors directly to Starship Children’s Hospital. Your referring general practitioner or emergency doctor should discuss any questions directly with the paediatrician at the hospital.
