Fine Needle Aspirate

A sample of a lung lesion can be obtained by putting a thin needle through the chest wall into the lesion. The needle can suck out material to look for cancer cells or infection. This is usually done in the Radiology Department by one of the specialist X-ray doctors (radiologist) using pictures from the CT scanner to guide placing the needle.  Local anaesthetic is put into your skin and muscles so that the test is not overly painful.
