Pituitary tumours are usually benign and are called adenomas. Some of these tumours can produce hormones that can lead to acromegaly, Cushing's Disease and prolactin secretion. Nonsecreting tumours often cause loss of visual fields, visual obscurations and headache.
They are treated by endoscopic transnasal transphenoidal removal of the tumour.
Prolactin secreting tumours will be treated primarily by the endocrinologist with medication rather than surgery.
