Genetic Testing
Genetic testing may be useful to provide information about a number of aspects of a genetic disease, such as:
- Diagnosis and prognosis
- Appropriate surveillance to prevent or treat symptoms of a condition
- Recurrence risks
- Reproductive options
- Identification of extended family who may have inherited, or be carriers of, a familial condition.
Diagnostic tests are performed when an individual has symptoms or signs of a condition.
Predictive tests are performed for healthy people who may have inherited a predisposition to a condition that presents later in life.
Carrier tests are offered to healthy people who may carry a genetic condition and therefore have an increased chance of having an affected child.
Pregnancy testing may be available for those at increased risk of having a child with a genetic condition.
