Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS is a hormonal disorder that affects 5 -10% of women of reproductive age.
It is a condition which is associated with a number of different symptoms, these symptoms can vary greatly from person to person.
These symptoms include:
- periods that are irregular, infrequent or heavy
- weight gain and increase in fat in your upper body
- excessive facial or body hair
- acne on both face and body
- some people with PCOS have difficulty falling pregnant spontaneously.
Diagnosis
This is made on the basis of symptoms and the results of blood tests, occasionally you may be asked to have an ultrasound scan to look at your ovaries in more detail.
Treatment
This varies, depending on the features of PCOS you are experiencing, and includes treatments that may help with excessive hair growth and acne, or may help with fertility.
