Turner's Syndrome

Turner's syndrome is a chromosome abnormality that affects only females. It may be detected at birth, during childhood due to failure to grow at a normal rate, or later when there is a failure of the pubertal growth spurt and failure to develop secondary sexual characteristics.

There can be considerable variation in the features of Turner's syndrome seen in women with the condition, but most women are shorter than average and many are infertile and generally require Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

During follow-up in clinic, a number of things will be looked at including HRT, bone density, hearing, heart and kidneys as well as a number of blood tests to look at thyroid function, liver function and cholesterol levels.
