Disorders of Reproduction

There are a number of conditions that can result in irregular or absent periods.

As well as PCOS (see above) and prolactinomas (see above under Pituitary Disorders), emotional stress, weight loss and intensive exercise can all result in irregular or absent periods.

Occasionally the onset of absent periods can be due to premature ovarian failure, otherwise known as premature menopause.

All of these conditions can normally be diagnosed with a series of blood tests. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause and whether fertility is an issue. If fertility is an issue, treatment may be offered by your endocrinologist or you may be referred on to a fertility specialist.
