Tamaki Healthcare PHO
The establishment of Tamaki Healthcare PHO (THPHO) was facilitated by the Auckland District Health Board (ADHB) and Tihi Ora Maori Purchasing Organisation (MAPO), with the sanction of the Ngati Whatua o Orakei Trust Board, in April 2003.
THPHO was established as a unique Maori-led access PHO and is expected to predominantly service high needs Maori, Pacific, immigrant and refugee populations. The uniqueness and philosophical intentions behind the PHO are not about creating a PHO that replicates mainstream PHOs. This will in itself challenge entrenched ideas about how primary healthcare should function, be delivered, monitored and measured.
This collaboration with ADHB and Tihi Ora MAPO in fact is a significant opportunity for THPHO as a change management organisation to explore better ways of providing primary healthcare to Maori and high needs populations in order to improve health outcomes and reduce health disparities.
