Early Medical Abortion (MTOP) is provided from 5+ weeks to 9 weeks from your last menstrual period. This is a non-surgical procedure intended to induce miscarriage. Many women feel that this is a more "natural" approach to pregnancy termination.
The procedure comprises 2 medications, mifepristone and misoprostol, taken 24-48 hours apart. The first tablet blocks the hormones that make the lining of the uterus hold onto the pregnancy. The second tablet causes the uterus to cramp and the lining to break down and expel the pregnancy.
If you think you might be interested in medical abortion, ask your referring doctor to organise a scan for you before your first visit to Te Mahoe Unit.
