General anaesthetic (GA) is used for second trimester terminations up to 19 weeks gestation (called D&E) and for some first trimester pregnancies when it is determined by the doctor that a procedure under GA is medically advised. During a GA procedure you are not awake. This procedure is not routinely offered to women under 15 weeks gestation. You may require an additional visit for either mifepristone orally 24 - 48 hours prior to the GA or laminaria (osmotic dilator) to be inserted into the cervix 24 hours prior to the GA. This will be discussed with you at your first appointment.
