Induction of labour (IOL) is occasionally done to terminate pregnancies over 16 weeks and the preferred method for those over 19 weeks at Wellington Hospital. It is done when a woman wishes to take the fetus home for burial or cremation or when medical evaluation of the fetus is warranted (such as with fetal anomalies). These procedures are similar to early medical termination in that the same medications are used. The process occurs over a period of 3-4 days and may require an overnight stay in hospital. Te Mahoe nurses and midwives support the women during this process. As we are a day unit, overnight stays are admitted to Ward 4 and transferred back as required.
