Laminaria is an osmotic dilator that is used to gently dilate the cervix prior to a surgical GA procedure when women are 16 weeks gestation or greater. Small rods are inserted into the cervix and as they absorb moisture, they swell and cause the cervical opening to gently enlarge over the next 24 hours, leading to less trauma to the cervix. This procedure takes about 15 minutes and is done the day before the termination by a Te Mahoe consultant. The laminaria is removed by the surgeon during the termination procedure.
