Introduction
Approximately 40% of New Zealand ’s quota refugees are re-settled in the Auckland area and it is estimated that approximately 20,000 live in Auckland City. Generally it is known that upon entry to the country, people from refugee backgrounds have high rates of infectious diseases, disabilities and chronic health problems. Physical problems are often complicated by psychological difficulties suffered as a consequence of their flight to safety. It may take 5-10 years for a person from a refugee background to regain a sense of control over their lives.
Current activity is focused on access to health services, interpreters and designing and delivering culturally appropriate programmes.
