Southern Cross Brightside Hospital was established originally on its central Auckland (Epsom) site in the 1940s. The hospital was completely rebuilt to modern, high tech specifications and officially re-opened in 2000. In 2009 it underwent a partial refurbishment which was completed in 2010. Brightside is a four-theatre hospital, providing 49 in-patient beds, and has a staff of around 100. The hospital counts amongst its special features a Visual/Digital theatre, Laminar Flow theatre and state-of-the-art theatre equipment. Late in 2009 Brightside opened a preadmission clinic which has proven a success when refining the patient's journey.
The hospital undertakes around 5,000 operations a year through the credentialled specialists who operate there. Brightside Hospital is proud to be able to offer a wide range of surgical intervention and post-operative care, that meets the patients’ requirements.
Surgery undertaken includes orthopaedics, urological, gynaecological, plastics, oral and general surgery. The hospital is best known for its gynaecological, orthopaedics and urological care which, in some instances, has led the way in New Zealand. Brightside was the first hospital in New Zealand to offer brachytherapy, a new type of treatment for some people with prostate cancer.
