Introduction
The aim of the oral health programme is to keep mouth, gums and teeth in good condition to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.  The Auckland DHB focus is particularly on children's and youth (0 – 17 years old) oral health.  Auckland DHB is currently implementing their Child and Adolescent Oral Health Business Case. In Auckland, the business case involves the building of 14 new or refurbished school dental clinics with new equipment, the employment of more staff and the purchase of specialised dental vans.  The investment made in the new and upgraded clinics will enhance and reconfigure the child and adolescent oral health service in Auckland.   The business case will ensure that:

  • all of the child and adolescent population of Auckland receive oral healthcare services. Services will be prioritised according to need with the intention of improving the outcomes experienced to an equal status across all of the population.
  • purpose-built facilities with modern equipment that meet today’s requirements will be established to provide a safe environment for staff, and patients and their families/Whanau, including the needs of disabled patients and their family/Whanau.
  • promote efficient and effective use of all resources – infrastructure and workforce.

The new model for oral health services will be implemented for all eligible children and youth by June 2012.
