Description

WISH is a charitable trust that was set up in 1993 to provide a community-based residential rehabilitation service for people who have a mental health issue. The Trust is dedicated to supporting these people to live the kind of life they would like to live and encouraging their participation in community life

An environment of respect, trust and aroha

WISH is committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Although we do not provide a kaupapa service, we make every endeavour to ensure cultural safety and acknowledgement of tikanga Maori. We aim to provide an environment in which the cultural, physical and emotional needs of all our residents are acknowledged and met, regardless of their ethnic or social background. “Together we support and encourage each other’s potential to grow in an environment of respect, trust and aroha.”

Working towards independent living

The Trust employs four full-time and five casual staff, including a General Manager and a Vocational Support Worker. Together with a Consumer Advisor, the Trust provides 24/7 support for 10 clients, working with the strengths - based model using a recovery approach to enhance residents’ potential for independent living.

Referral Process

WISH is funded by the Auckland District Health Board to provide residential support for a maximum of 10 adults with a history of Axis 1 psychiatric illness. Residents who choose to reside at WISH will have been assessed as in need of level 3 support by a Regional Co-ordinator based at the Taylor Centre – one of the community mental health services within the Auckland region.

The referral process

To gain a referral to WISH, any potential applicant needs to consult their key worker with a view to assessment and if appropriate, put on a waiting list for entry to WISH, (should there not be any vacancies at the time). It is the key worker's responsibility to liaise with the Taylor Centre Regional Coordinator with regard to any aspect of the referral process, on your behalf. All paperwork needs to be completed by your key worker in the first instance.

Staff

The management, staff, residents and trustees of WISH work together to foster a culture that acknowledges individuality as well as community, and encourages honesty, trust, respect, sensitivity, safety and aroha amongst everyone who lives, works and visits here.

The WISH Trust staff

The Trust employs a dedicated group of four full-time, five casual including a General Manager and a Vocational Support Worker. Together the Trust provides 24/7 support for 10 clients, and the occassional community package of care, working with the strengths - based model.

The staff work on a shift basis and duties rotate across both houses on a weekly cycle.
