Southern Cross Central Lakes Hospital, is a joint venture partnership between Central Lakes Trust and Southern Cross Healthcare, whose shared purpose is to support the health and wellbeing of communities in the region.

The facility began operating in early 2022, and includes 3 operating theatres and 13 inpatient beds, each with its own ensuite facilities.

Hospital services are available to both privately and publicly funded patients to support broader access to healthcare in the region. Accident and emergency services are not offered, however the hospital will be providing planned surgery for patients who are eligible for access through ACC.

Ophthalmology
Ophthalmology is the medical specialty which deals with the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye.

Since ophthalmologists perform operations on eyes (in particular cataracts), they are considered to be both surgical and medical specialists.

Cataract

A tiny incision is made in your eye and the cataract is broken up into small pieces using ultrasound vibrations. Once all the pieces have been removed, an artificial lens is implanted into your eye.

Glaucoma

Treatment is aimed at improving drainage of the excess fluid in the eye. Laser Surgery: there are several different glaucoma laser techniques, but all involve aiming a laser beam into the eye which you will see as a bright light, similar to a camera flash. Trabeculectomy: this is a surgical procedure in which a tiny hole is made in the sclera (white of the eye) that provides an alternative fluid drainage pathway.
