Description
Tiaho Mai is a residential unit, supporting people with mental health problems during a crisis. We provide care for people from Ōtāhuhu to Mercer, coast to coast including Kaiaua and Port Waikato.
Tiaho Mai means “the light that comes from the moon and the stars - shine here" in Te Reo Maaori.
We are part of the services provided by Counties Manukau Health Adult Mental Health.
Who Are We?
At Tiaho Mai we provide 24 hour mental health treatment services for people with serious or complicated mental health concerns. We provide a safe environment where people can stay for short periods of time. Our goal is to help people reach a point where they can safely access other mental health services.
Where Are We Based?
Tiaho Mai residential services are situated on the grounds of Middlemore Hospital, near the rear Colvin Complex. We currently can hold up to 52 residents in our various wards. During your stay your family and friends are welcome to visit you (see Visiting Hours for more information).
We try to keep our services as welcoming for you and your whaanau/friends as possible. During your stay you will be able to access internet facilities, telephones and bathing facilities. Kai/Meals are regularly served throughout the day.
You are welcome to bring mobile phones, radios and other personal items with you, although we ask you to consider others when you use them. We prefer that you leave valuables and large amounts of money with someone else when you stay at Tiaho Mai. Drugs, alcohol and items that pose a safety risk to others are not permitted on the premises.
Nga Whetu Marama (translates to “the Bright Stars”) is a marae / whare situated alongside Tiaho Mai. It was named by the local Kaumātua and Kuia of Tainui. You are welcome to use this venue when family or friends are visiting or for your own support.

Staff
Our Team
While staying at Tiaho Mai you may see a number of different staff members who will support you in your recovery. Our team all work together to decide what treatments will support you, providing you with the best care possible.
Some of the staff members you may meet include:
Registered Nurses/Enrolled Nurses - Registered and enrolled nurses are your main point of contact within Tiaho Mai. They are the mental health professionals responsible for coordinating your care.
Charge Nurse Manager/Associate - Charge nurse managers and associates are responsible for the overall running of the ward where you will be staying.
Psychiatric Assistants - Psychiatric assistants work under the direction of registered nurses.
Psychiatrists and other Medical Doctors - Medical doctors support you with the medical aspects of mental health, including diagnoses, prescribing and monitoring medications. Medical doctors include psychiatrists, MOSS (Medical Officer Specialist Scale), registrars, house officers and GP consultants.
Social Workers - Social workers assist you, your family/whānau and support people with a variety of your concerns and needs, including:

Occupational Therapists - Occupational Therapists provide a number of activities to improve your stay and enhance your life and leisure skills.
Psychologists - Psychologists provide a range of therapies and counselling services to reduce your distress and promote emotional wellbeing.
Kaumātua and Kuia Services - Kaumātua and Kuia are available to support you, your whaanau and give advice to staff on appropriate protocol.
Staff Members from other Mental Health Teams - May contact you while you are at Tiaho Mai to discuss the services they can provide.
The Service User (You) - All service users are considered key parts of the Tiaho Mai team. Your assessments, feedback and information about yourself are an integral part of our service.
Your Family/Whaanau and Friends - Tiaho Mai actively promotes involving your support system (family and friends) in your recovery.
Referral Expectations
Counties Manukau Health Adult Mental Health receive all referrals to our service. A person from the Intake and Acute Assessment team may contact you and your family to discuss your needs.
For urgent psychiatric support please contact Adult Mental Health Services on (09) 261 3700, or in case of an emergency call 111.
Admission to Tiaho Mai
We try to make sure your experience of entering Tiaho Mai is as welcoming as possible for you and your family/whaanau.
On entering our service you will be introduced to your admission nurse who will give you all the information you need about your stay and help you with your belongings. They will then show you to your room. After you are admitted your nurse will arrange for you to have a medical examination with a House Officer, who will look for physical issues that might impact your mental health. They will also arrange for you to meet with a psychiatrist as soon as possible, who will complete an assessment and decide how we can help you during your stay.
Your family/ whaanau or support people are usually welcome to stay with you throughout the admission process.
Leaving Tiaho Mai
While you are at Tiaho Mai someone from your treatment team will discuss your options for mental health support after you leave. They may transfer you to one of the other Counties Manukau Health Adult Mental Health teams – in which case a staff member from that team will contact you during your stay to meet you and find out about your needs.
We encourage you to talk to your nurse or social worker about any supports you may need after you leave.

Other Facilities:
Inpatient services are also provided at our other facilities, which include Kidz First Children's Hospital, the Manukau Surgery Centre, Pukekohe Hospital, Franklin Memorial Hospital, Botany Downs Maternity Unit and Papakura Maternity Unit as well as dedicated mental health and rehabilitation units. Outpatient services are primarily provided at Manukau SuperClinic™ and Botany SuperClinic™.
