Description

What we help with

The Women's Health Pelvic Pain Clinic is a multidisciplinary service which includes:
  • Pain Specialists – doctors with specific experience in the management of women’s health pain conditions
  • Gynaecologists with experience in the management of complex endometriosis and pelvic pain
  • Women’s Health Clinical Psychologists who specialise in helping patients manage chronic pain
  • Women’s Health Physiotherapists who specialise in the management of pelvic pain
  • Women’s Health Pain Nurse Specialists who lead the inpatient pain service at Auckland City Hospital and are experienced in the management of women’s health pain conditions
We help women with persistent pelvic pain which may or may not be related to endometriosis. We also help women experiencing pain conditions in pregnancy such as lower back pain, pelvic girdle pain, pubic symphysis dysfunction, sacroiliac joint pain and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Our clinical team manage inpatients and outpatients, allowing for a smooth transition in both directions between hospital and community. We adopt a holistic approach to pain management, aiming to empower women with the skills to manage their condition.

How do I access this service?

Referral

Referral Expectations

To be seen within our service you must be under the care of a gynaecologist or an obstetrician with access rights to Te Toka Tumai Auckland Hospital.

Please note, only referrals from specialists are accepted. We are not a diagnostic service, so it's important that women are seen by a specialist such as a gynaecologist or obstetrician first. If you are under the care of a midwife, your midwife can refer you to an obstetrician to initiate the process.

What to expect
Assessments will be carried out jointly with doctors, specialist pain nurses and clinical psychologists, depending on the nature and complexity of your pain condition.

Our multidisciplinary team will formulate a management plan which is specific to your pain condition. This may include:
  • Appropriate pain medications
  • Women’s health physiotherapy
  • Women’s health clinical psychology
  • Gynaecology procedures
For women with pain issues in pregnancy, we aim to provide effective relief in a way that is safest for your baby. This means choosing the safest medication and ensuring we use the smallest doses necessary.
