What services are provided at the Mercy Heart Centre?
Mercy Heart Centre is a fully configured state of the art centre for angiography and angioplasty. This service is available for people living in Otago, Southland and South Canterbury.
The centre’s Clinical Director is Dr Gerard Wilkins.
Following your GP referring you to a private cardiologist, an appointment will be made to see them at their rooms.
Prior to or following this appointment, your cardiologist may run a series of tests to assist in management decisions. Depending on these results you may require treatment or further tests. One option for further diagnosis is coronary angiography.
If requiring coronary angiography (an angiogram), your cardiologist may refer you to the Mercy Heart Centre. The time between this referral and when you have your coronary angiogram is between 2-4 weeks.
On receipt of your Cardiologists referral, an appointment willl be sent to you from the Mercy Heart Centre along with patient information, and contact details.
This appointment is for the angiogram procedure with no separate pre admission required.

Visitors are most welcome between 2pm-8pm. Should you wish to visit at other times please consult with the nursing staff or your specialist.
If visiting the hospital or attending an outpatient appointment a cafe is located on the ground floor of the Marinoto Clinic which is within Mercy Hospital.
As an inpatient you will be able to choose from a selection of set menus based on the National Heart Foundation criteria and the New Zealand Food and Nutrition guidelines. Special dietary needs are well catered for, including the provision of gluten-free food, diabetic and vegetarian requirements.
Mercy Heart Centre is located within Mercy Hospital at 72 Newington Avenue Dunedin. Newington Avenue runs directly off the Maori Hill end of Highgate.
When attending the Mercy Heart Centre please go to the main reception of Mercy Hospital where a nurse will meet you.
