Description

A new national genetic service "Genetic Health Service New Zealand" (GHSNZ) was launched on 1 May 2012. Formerly the Central and Southern Regional Genetics Service (C&SRGS), GHSNZ Central Hub is located at Wellington Hospital, providing genetic services to the geographic area from New Plymouth to Nelson. We offer clinics in Nelson, Wellington, Kenepuru and Lower Hutt, Palmerston North, Whanganui, Taranaki and Hawke's Bay.

Genetic Services provide information and education, risk assessment and clinical management, diagnosis and laboratory testing for a wide variety of inherited and/ or congenital conditions.

Referral Expectations

Patients and family/whanau may be referred for  a genetic diagnostic assessment (where the diagnosis is unknown) or for genetic counselling (where the diagnosis has been confirmed already).

A Clinical Geneticist will see patients for the genetic diagnostic assessment.

A Genetic Associate will see patients for genetic counselling.

Referrals should include all relevant/known contact information and previous assessments and investigations where possible.

Charges

All consultations with Genetic Services are provided free of charge. Like all hospital services, we are required to prioritise our services within budget. However, all approved genetic testing is free.
