NGO Mental Health and Addiction Services in the Community
NGOs (Non-government organisations) are non-profit, independent, community organisations that are not affiliated with central or local government, although they may receive financial and/or other support from the government.
A mental health NGO employs a wide range of workers that work within the community to provide support to people who have experienced or are experiencing mental illness. These services vary widely in what they provide but all aim to assist a person on their journey to wellness and to maintain wellness and quality of life.

Smokefree at Tiaho Mai
Tiaho Mai, along with all other facilities on the Middlemore Hospital site, is proudly smoke free. We all know that ‘smoking kills’ but did you know that smoking kills people who have a mental illness disproportionately and earlier than the general population? Tiaho Mai is striving to promote an environment that promotes wellness and recovery in all aspects of care. All service users, whanau and visitors will be asked to leave any smoking items such as tobacco, lighters, matches, rolling papers and filters at the reception desk on arrival. These will be returned at the point of leaving the facility. We are committed to interventions that support the health and well being of service users who are entrusted to our care. We will be offering Nicotine Replacement Therapy to all service users who identify as smokers.
