Whirinaki Child, Family and Youth Mental Health

Description

Whirinaki (meaning to support) is a community based specialist health service for children and young people, living within the Counties Manukau region, who are experiencing serious emotional, psychological or behavioural disturbance, suspected psychiatric illness or serious mental illness.

We support creativity and innovation in interventions and work closely with the client's and family's wider systems including schools, community, church and extended family.

We provide specialist assessment and treatment for children and young people experiencing significant emotional, mental health and/or behavioural problems.

It is very important that we see the child or young person with the whole family or significant adults in their life.

After assessment you/your child may be offered a range of treatments and/or interventions including:

We see clients on site as well as at a number of satellite clinics, at schools, community venues and at home. We have a number of multidisciplinary teams:

  • Kohia (Assertive Youth Outreach Team)
  • Vaka Toa Team (Pacific Island Team)
  • Paediatric Consult Liaison Team

Exclusions to this service include mental health issues resulting solely from: intellectual disability, conduct disorder, alcohol and drug dependence. Priority is given to those children/young people with the most severe and acute problems and their family/whanau.

Referral Expectations

Who can refer to us?

Whirinaki is contracted to provide a mental health service to the children and young people living in the Counties Manukau region. We will accept referrals for children and adolescents where there is a concern that they may have a mental health condition which requires specialist input into the assessment and the treatment/management plan.

Referrals are received from health professionals, schools, Child, Youth & Family Services (CYFS), police, community services and NGO providers.

 

Who to refer?

If you are working with or have a child/young person experiencing behavioural/psychological problems and emotional distress, you can ring Whirinaki to discuss if a referral is appropriate.

 

Eligibility:

  • Aged from 4 years and up to their 18th birthday
  • Domiciled most of the week in Counties Manukau area, including staying at a boarding school
  • NZ resident. Some non-NZ residents are eligible for publicly funded healthcare
  • Whirinaki will see all young people for urgent assessments.

 

Examples of presenting issues would include:

  • Low mood
  • Anxiety
  • Suicidal preoccupation and self-harm
  • Disruptive behaviour including aggression, hyperactivity and attention problems
  • Psychosis
  • Eating disorders
  • Marked withdrawal or isolation
  • Chronic school refusal
  • Aggressive behaviour associated with emotional distress
