What is a gynaecological oncologist?
Oncology is a branch of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of cancer.  Gynaecological oncology is a sub-specialty of gynaecology dealing with cases of female reproductive tract cancers.

After completion of general obstetrics and gynaecology specialist training, the doctor then completes an additional three years of further formal training specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of women with gynaecological cancer.  This training includes advanced surgery of the female genital tract, bowel and urinary tract as well as training in chemotherapy and radiation therapy.  The doctor is then required to sit and pass an examination set by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology to obtain a Certificate in Gynaecological Oncology (CGO).  Recertification every three years is mandatory to continue to practice as a certified gynaecological oncologist.

Appearance or reconstructive surgery is also provided.  This includes surgery for:
  • Aesthetic Vaginal Procedures
  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse
  • Incontinence

Referral Expectations

Appointments for patients can be made by phoning (09) 520 9361.

When the patient comes for their appointment, please ensure that they bring any test results and reports received, including x-rays, pathology slides and reports. Your specialist will also need a list of any prescription medications taken, including the dosage.

What should a new patient expect?
Initial consultations are usually 45-minute appointments but may be longer if the issues are complex. This allows the doctor to comprehensively discuss patient's history and perform any necessary manual examination.
