Who We Are?
ORA Services (Older Persons, Rehabilitation and Allied Health) include specialised assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services covering Wellington to the Kapiti Coast. We provide treatment both in the community and on inpatient wards.
Inpatient Services
Inpatient rehabilitation services are located on wards at Kenepuru Hospital, where there are 10- to 12-bed units focusing on specialist rehabilitation, along with a number of beds designed to look after those people who have recently had a stroke.
There are also a number of beds based at Kenepuru Hospital dedicated to the rehabilitation of older people who have broken bones (known as orth-geriatrics) or had admissions to hospital for other reasons.
The service provides assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for people aged 16 years and upwards with neurological conditions, stroke, brain injury, musculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions or who have the potential to benefit from rehabilitation that is best provided by a specialist non-acute service.
What services do Wards 6 & 7 provide?
Both wards have a team of experienced staff with specialised skills to provide individualised treatment and rehabilitation. The intervention will address specific areas i.e.
- assessment of medical, physical and cognitive functioning
- rehabilitation with individualised programmes
- treatment of specific impairments
- training with appropriate aids and appliances
- re-training in living skills
- advice regarding home modifications
- advice and assistance with planning from discharge destination e.g. organising home support
- discharge, residential placement
- support in adapting to life changes
- the education and support needs of the family / carers.
The client's active participation in decision making about the rehabilitation programme is expected. All patients are encouraged to complete usual routines, including being up and dressed during the day and to have meals in the patient dayroom.
Information including maps, transport and visiting hours is available on the Kenepuru Community Hospital page of this site.
Community Services
What is the community team?
It is an inter-professional health team of people who work together to ensure that assessment, treatment and rehabilitation needs and goals for our clients are met. The team is based at three sites - Wellington & Kenepuru Hospitals and Kapiti Health Centre. The aim of each community team is to support the client, as part of their family / whanau, to achieve their full potential within their own community.
The community team is hospital-based, but has strong links with community groups in order to provide an integrated service.
Who is the Team?
- Liaison nurses
- Occupational therapists
- Physiotherapists
- Rehab assistants and workshop technician
- Social workers
- Speech & language therapists

What services do the Community Team provide?
We provide assessment to determine appropriate treatment / rehabilitation for each client.
Depending on the individual's needs, the community team offers a specialised rehabilitation programme. This may include:
- Community or home visits
- Outpatient treatments
- Worksite assessments & return to work planning
- Coordination of the rehabilitation programme
- Support and advocacy for the client and their family / whanau carers

- Specialist ACC contracted rehabilitation (e.g. training for independence programmes).
What Do We Do?
We work in partnership with people to maximise abilities and optimise lifestyles following illness, surgery or injury from an accident.
We provide individual assessment, treatment and rehabilitation programmes for people aged 16 years and over who live in our region and have disabilities arising from ...
- Stroke
- Complex musculoskeletal and orthopaedic injury and illness including amputations
- Complex age-related illness and disease that would benefit from multidisciplinary assessment, treatment and rehabilitation
- Neurological illness
- Traumatic brain injury.
... and for people who have been assessed by members of the Team as having reasonable potential for functional improvement within a specified time frame.
What is Rehabilitation?
Rehabilitation is restoring and relearning lost abilities or finding new ways of doing everyday activities to maximise one's lifestyle.
Successful rehabilitation is a partnership between the client and health professionals involved and is very different from being ‘treated’ in hospital or at home. In all areas of our service, highly trained nursing, therapy, medical and technical staff work closely with clients, families/whanau and friends, to design and implement individualised rehabilitation programmes.
All clients are encouraged to do as much for themselves as they can safely do.
