Referral Expectations

Counties Manukau Health provides a smoking cessation service (which provides support to people to stop smoking). If you are (or have recently been) a patient at Middlemore Hospital, Manukau SuperClinic or any of our outreach clinics, then you can be referred to this service.  Ask any staff member who has been involved in your care to refer you.

If you are not in hospital and would like support, please see the free Community Based Services below.

At Counties Manukau Health we understand not everyone who comes to hospital wants to give up smoking. We'd like to support you as much as possible while you're in hospital, and help you manage cravings to smoke.  Ask any of our nurses or doctors if you would like to use nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to help deal with nicotine withdrawal. Nicotine replacement therapy is safe, and can double your chances of stopping smoking successfully. Trying patches, gum or lozenges while you're in hospital does not mean you have to commit to anything after you leave.

We have a duty to provide a safe and healthy environment to all our patients, visitors and staff.  Whether you would like support to manage nicotine withdrawal or not, we ask you to respect our non-smoking policy while you are in the hospital and grounds.

If a hospital stay has got you thinking about ways to get healthy, including cutting out tobacco, we can offer support and referral to a community or hospital based service. Of course, you don't need to wait for us to refer you; you can contact a community based free service (see below) to help you stop smoking at any time.
