Starship Paediatric Community Child Health and Disability Service - Child Development Team

Hours

Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.

Description

The Child Development Team is part of the Community Child Health and Disability Service.

This service is for children with neurological and/or developmental difficulties e.g.
  • Developmental Delay
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Down Syndrome
  • Torticollis
  • Spina Bifida

The Team includes:

  • Clerical Support
  • Community Health Workers (Maori, Pacific, Refugee and New Migrant) 
  • Dietitians
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Social Workers
  • Speech-Language Therapists
  • Team Leader
  • Therapy Assistant
  • Visiting Therapists

A paediatrician is regularly available to the team for consultation.

The Service can provide:

Assessment
Of a child's abilities using skilled assessment, observation and discussion with the family.

Areas include:
  • Developmental milestones
  • Play
  • Feeding skills, growth and nutrition
  • Communication skills
  • Self care skills
  • Specialised equipment and environment alteration
  • Family/Whanau support counselling

Intervention/Therapy
Developmental programmes are planned in co-operation with families and other agencies. We can visit at home, pre-school, school or the child can attend the Centre. We aim to offer a holistic approach.

Support
We can assist families/carers with support or access to information, services, benefits and counselling.

Referral Expectations

Access Criteria:
The Child Development Team accepts referrals for children from birth to 5 years and those children over 5 years with physical disabilities who are not eligible for education based funding for therapy services; need specialised equipment, and / or housing alterations or require pre and post surgical therapy.

Area Covered:
The area is bordered by Point Chevalier, Avondale, Blockhouse Bay, Otahuhu, Mt Wellington, Glen Innes, The Eastern Bays and The Gulf Islands.

Who can Refer:
Referrals can be made by parents/caregivers, community workers, medical or educational personnel.
