Description

Our consultants are two of New Zealand's most experienced and comprehensively trained Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic surgeons, having between them over fifty years experience in their specialty and they keep up to date by meeting the requirements of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Continuing Medical Education Programme.
This means they can offer you good advice about your particular problem and give you appropriate options to help you achieve your expectations. We pride ourselves on the quality of our surgery and excellent supportive post-operative care. Our team of nurses and support staff are highly trained to take care of you and help you make a good recovery. We all love working with our patients to achieve excellent outcomes whether it be for removal of a facial skin cancer, breast augmentation or a facelift.

What is Plastic Surgery?
Plastic surgery covers a wide range of different surgical procedures that repair, reconstruct or replace structures in many different parts of the body including the skin, face and head, hands, breast and abdomen. Surgery for cosmetic enhancement / improvement of all areas of the body is also in the scope of plastic surgery.

Plastic surgery is not called that because of the use of plastic materials but for the reason it is the speciality of remodelling and reshaping malleable human tissues. Plastic is called that because it is malleable when warmed i.e. it becomes soft and can be shaped and modelled in the same sense that surgeons shape and model tissues in reconstruction etc. Plastic surgery was being practised long before modern ’plastics’ were invented. The greek word ’plastikos’ means "mould". Some synthetic materials (plastics) such as polyethylene implants are used in facial bone reconstruction etc.

Plastic surgery can generally be divided into two main types:

  • Reconstructive surgery: is performed on parts of the body that are abnormal or have been affected by a birth defect, accident or disease. This includes cleft lip and palate repair, cranio-facial reconstruction, scar revision or reconstruction (including skin grafts) following burns. Microvascular free flap surgery is often used in head and neck reconstruction after major cancer removals and in the lower limb for large traumatic bone and skin defects (after car and motorbike accidents). Surgery is usually performed to improve function, but may also be performed to bring the appearance of a part of the body as close as possible to normal.

  • Aesthetic or cosmetic surgery:  improves appearance or body image by reshaping features of the face or body e.g. breast enlargement, breast reduction, rhinoplasty, otoplasty, brow lift, face lift, eyelid tightening (blepharoplasty), abdominoplasty, body contouring,  liposuction.

Services offered at the Auckland Plastic Surgical Centre include:

  • facial rejuvenation (face, neck and brow lifts, eye tucks, lip enhancement, Botox and dermal fillers)
  • nose (rhinoplasty) and ear reshaping (otoplasty)
  • breast enlargement, reduction, lifting and reconstruction
  • abdominal and lower body recontouring
  • liposuction & liposculpture
  • trauma reconstruction and scar revision
  • diagnosis and excision of skin cancers and moles
  • surgery for paediatric problems and congenital anomalies e.g. Dermoid cysts, vascular malformations, cleft lip & palate, extra or fused fingers (syndactyly), hypospadius
  • a wide range of hand surgical procedures e.g. Dupuytren's contracture, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendon and nerve repairs.

The Auckland Plastic Surgical Centre team is experienced and supportive and will make sure time is available for all your questions and concerns to be addressed.

The Centre also offers free confidential telephone or email information and discussion, with no obligation to proceed with surgery.

Referral Expectations

You will have an initial consultation with your plastic surgeon who will assess your general health and discuss the best type of surgical procedure for your particular problem.  You will be given options and alternatives and approximate costs for the various options. You will be given instructions on medications to avoid before surgery, medications to take on prescription after surgery, and what to do and not do in the recovery phase.

Except for minor surgery you will have two consultations. The first to establish what the diagnosis is and what the probable treatment plan will be. You will be given information brochures to read. At the second visit any questions arising from the written material will be discussed, the surgical plan reviewed, modified if needed and then confirmed. A consent form is done once you have decided to proceed with the surgery and a firm booking for surgery is made.

As your surgeon will discuss with you, if your treatment requires surgery they usually work with Anaesthesia Auckland Ltd. In particular, each surgeon usually works with the following anaesthetists:

Dr de Chalain
Dr Bruce Anderson
Dr Alison Kirkman
Dr Cornelius Kruger
Dr Philip Leightley

Charges

There are standard scale fees for consultations of varying length and complexity. A phone call to our office is all that is needed to discuss these.

After the first consultation the surgeon will have a good idea of what operation will be needed for your particular problem, how long it will take to do and thus an estimate of the likely cost can then be prepared.

There are basically three principal components to overall cost:

1. Hospital charges: for operating theatre and consumables used during the procedure, recovery room and overnight ward and 'hotel' costs.

2. Anaesthetist's services: pre-op assessment, discussion about your anaesthetic, consent process, delivery of your anaesthetic, post-op medications, fluids, prescriptions etc.

3. Surgeon's fees: (a) Initial consultation. (b) Fee for surgery based on time taken and degree of difficulty, skill and expertise needed. This fee also includes post-op care by our practice nurse, dressing changes and follow-up consultations with the surgeon for 'quality control' for one year after surgery.

Whilst every effort is made to provide accurate cost estimates for the hospital and anaesthetist based on data supplied to us, we are not responsible for variations. Some patients get individual estimates from the hospital management and anaesthetist, before surgery, for a more accurate idea of their costs. Fees are based on time actually taken to do an operation. Generally time taken is within 5-10 minutes of that estimated, but occasionally due to unforeseen circumstances or problems with a patient's bleeding/poor clotting for example, an operation may take much longer thus costing more than anticipated.

Once a surgical fee estimate has been given it is valid for 3 months unless the patient changes his/her mind about how much surgery is to be done. A new estimate on the new requirements would be done.

Health insurance policies vary widely in what surgery they cover. Check with your company before surgery for prior approval and an estimate of how much they will pay towards the cost of your surgery. Any shortfall is the patient's responsibility.

ACC may cover trauma surgery either on contract or non-contract where the patient pays a proportion to get the surgery done more quickly.

Cosmetic surgery gets no cover from health insurance companies or ACC generally speaking, though there may be a few exceptions in special circumstances. Patients having cosmetic surgery are responsible for their own account payments (unless they are lucky enough to have a family member or benefactor paying for them!).
