What is Plastic Surgery?

Plastic surgery covers a wide range of different surgical procedures that repair, reconstruct or replace structures in many different parts of the body including the skin, face and head, hands, breast and stomach. Plastic surgery does not involve the use of plastic materials.
Plastic surgery can generally be divided into two main types:

  • Reconstructive surgery: is performed on parts of the body that are abnormal or have been affected by a birth defect, accident or disease. This includes cleft lip and palate repair, scar revision or reconstruction (including skin grafts) following burns. Surgery is usually performed to improve function, but may also be performed to bring the appearance of a part of the body as close as possible to normal.
  • Aesthetic or cosmetic surgery: improves appearance or body image by reshaping features of the face or body e.g. breast enlargement, face lift, liposuction.

Bruce focuses on Reconstructive Plastic Surgery particularly in relation to skin cancer, trauma and hand surgery.

Referral Expectations

Normally you are best to be referred from your GP, since your GP will include relevant details of your medical history and medications. Patients should then phone the clinic receptionist to make an appointment. Alternatively phone my nurse on 021 524 003 to discuss the appropriateness of your referral.

You will have an initial consultation with me during which I will assess your general health and discuss the treatment options with you. If surgery is recommended then the details of this will be discussed. This will include an estimate of the cost of the operation.

Before your surgery commences, you will need to gain prior approval from your insurance company that they will fund the cost of your operation. How much of the costs will be reimbursed by your insurance company depends on the type of policy. It is important that you clarify this with your insurer.

You can book a surgery date either at the time of your initial consultation or at a later date by contacting my nurse on her mobile phone 021 524 003.
