Description

What is Radiology?

Radiological procedures are used for looking at the internal structures of the body, whether bone or soft tissue. Usually these examinations are carried out to:
  • diagnose disease states, such as cancer or heart disease
  • show the extent of injury to body structures
  • to aid in interventional procedures, such as angiography.

What is Scintigraphy?

Scintigraphy, or nuclear medicine, uses radioactive tracers to assess the function of organs at a molecular level.  Radiation doses are comparable to x-ray examinations, there are no reactions to the tracers and the tests are therefore exceptionally safe and well tolerated.

Procedures / Treatments

  • Bone Scanning

Bone scanning is a well established technique and is one of the most reliable, sensitive and valuable procedures in scintigraphy.  The scan can detect abnormalities weeks to months before routine skeletal x-rays.… More PDF

  • Cardiac Imaging

Myocardial perfusion imaging is a noninvasive diagnostic test to compare the blood flow to the heart muscle (myocardium) at rest and during exercise as a means of detecting coronary artery disease.… More PDF

  • Hepatobiliary Scan

Hepatobiliary scans are used to: diagnose acute cholecystitis evaluate extrahepatic biliary tract obstruction evaluate post-surgical biliary tract evaluate Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction detect bile leaks diagnose biliary atresia and other congenital anomalies of the biliary tract evaluate liver transplants investigate unexplained pain.… More PDF

  • Liver/Spleen Colloid Study

Used to: assess chronic liver disease assess liver or spleen size and configuration diagnose focal nodular hyperplasia. More

  • Renal Scan

A renal scan is used to: assess the relative function of each kidney check for renal scarring evaluate congenital abnormalities.… More PDF

  • DTPA Renogram

A renogram (DTPA or MAG3) provides information relating to renal vascularity, renal function and excretion.  It is used in cases of: renal obstruction assessment of transplants to differentiate a dilated from an obstructed renal collecting system diagnosis of renal artery stenosis. More PDF

  • Lymph Nodes Mapping

Cancers can spread either by haematogenous (blood) routes to bones, lungs, liver, or brain or by lymphatic routes to lymph nodes.… More PDF

  • Gastric Emptying Scan

A Scintigraphy or Nuclear Medicine gastric emptying study provides a simple non-invasive means of quantitating gastric (stomach) emptying rate and transit of food along the small intestine.… More PDF

  • Colonic Transit Scan

A Scintigraphy Colonic Transit scan is a simple and easy way to follow the transit of food along the small intestine and colon (large intestine).… More PDF

  • Thyroid Imaging

A thyroid scintigraphy scan is a simple and easy way to see the size and function of the thyroid gland.  They are used to: evaluate thyroid lumps known as nodules evaluate hyperthyroidism (production of more thyroid hormone than is needed) quantify thyroid function (by calculating the quantity of tracer uptake… More

  • Lung Imaging

Used to diagnose pulmonary embolism and evaluate regional pulmonary perfusion and/or ventilation. More
