Interests

What is Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery?

This is the specialty formally known as Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT for short).
Its name was changed to recognise the fact that Specialists in this field are trained in dealing with disorders of the Nose, Mouth, Throat, Thyroid and Parathyroid glands, Parotid and salivary glands & neck lumps.

Less well known is the management of malignant skin tumours (such as Melanomas & squamous or basal cell carcinomas) that have spread to the Parotid gland, neck lymph nodes or involve large areas of skin, muscle or bone.

The management of Head and Neck conditions is often complex, as they can affect one’s ability to eat, drink & communicate. Thus patients may present with swallowing difficulties or speech difficulties because of impairment of the mouth, tongue or throat. Breathing problems, neck lumps, and also cosmetic issues are other major reasons for concern & thus referral.

(It does not include disorders of the Eye, Brain, Spinal Cord, Vertebrae or neck muscles which are suitably catered for by other specialists).

Why see Allan Keast?

Specialists involved in this work must have had a broad training in all aspects of Otolaryngology, but specifically head and neck surgery, and be able to provide a multidisciplinary approach. Patients frequently require further supportive treatment following surgery, and the speciality has strong links with Oncology, Dentistry, Speech Therapy and Nutritional Services.

Operating on these types of conditions often creates complex defects. These often require reconstruction using a wide range of techniques, employing state of the art techniques (including Free Tissue Transfer).

Not all ENT surgeons and general surgeons are Head and Neck surgeons and this specialty requires training way beyond that of most basic surgical training programs. The occasional surgeon in this specialty has much higher complication rates than those who perform these procedures every week – I am dedicated to providing a personalised and quality service.

What else can Allan offer?

I also provide a general Otolaryngology service for both Adults & Children. This includes:

  • Ear infections
  • Wax removal
  • Glue ear
  • Hearing loss
  • Tonsillitis
  • Swallowing disorders
  • Nasal obstruction
  • Hayfever management
  • Sinus problems
  • Snoring
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea

During your referral process if I cannot manage your condition then I will arrange for a suitable alternative Specialist to see you.
