About The Fellowship

Supporting Families in Mental Illness (formerly known as Schizophrenia Fellowship) has a long history of working with people who experience mental illness and their family and whanau in New Zealand. There are 20 branch organisations across the country that all provide a service for the family and whanau of people who are experiencing mental illness. These services are free to use and offer information, education and support to understand mental illness, how it effects us, what we can do, and what treatments and services are available. We also provide advocacy for family and whanau as they interact with mental health and community agencies. The SFMI workers are mobile and can support individuals, couples and family groups. They also run education sessions and regular support groups.

Some local branches have developed other mental health support services for family and whanau or people who experience mental illness, according to local need. Please refer to your local organisation to find out what they specifically offer.

SFMI NZ acknowledges the challenges faced by family and whanau when someone in their lives has mental illness. We know that support and education can enhance recovery for everyone affected.
