Description

The Kaumātua Drop-in space at the Rōngomātāne centre provides a safe, vibrant, and culturally grounded environment dedicated to the hauora (wellbeing) of kaumātua, kuia, and the older community in Porirua.

We offer a welcoming space for those aged 55+ to foster social connections, share knowledge, and maintain an active, independent lifestyle.

Our Services

  • Social Connection: A warm environment to connect with peers, share stories, have a cuppa and participate in community learning.

  • Cultural Elder Abuse Response Service: Specialist support for those experiencing or at risk of elder abuse and neglect. We operate from a Kaupapa Māori perspective.

  • Advocacy & Tautoko: Supporting you to navigate systems and ensuring your voice is heard in decisions regarding your life.

  • Whānau-Centred Support: Working alongside you and your whānau to build a sustainable circle of care.

  • Specialist Liaison: Acting as a bridge to other services and support to ensure holistic care.

Our Approach (Manaaki Kaumātua)

We are committed to Upholding Your Mana. Our team operates under the principle that you are the expert of your own life. We prioritise your self-determination and work discreetly to restore Tapu (protection) and safety if you are feeling vulnerable, neglected, or hurt.

Who We Support

Our doors are open to a diverse range of cultures within the Porirua region, including:

  • Māori and Pasifika
  • Asian, African, and Middle Eastern communities
  • New migrant communities
  • The region covered is Porirua Kapiti-Mana, Newlands, Johnsonville, Haywards Hill through to Pukerua Bay

Referrals: We accept self-referrals, whānau referrals, and professional referrals from healthcare providers and Community Organisations.

Note: If you are concerned about the safety or wellbeing of an elder, our Cultural Elder Abuse Response Service provides confidential, culturally safe intervention and support.

  • From the station, it is approximately a 10-minute walk (about 800m) to the centre at 13 Cobham Court. You can walk through the North City Shopping Centre or follow the main road towards the City Centre.

By Bus

Several local Metlink bus routes stop within a short walking distance of the centre.

  • Route 220 (Tītahi Bay – Porirua – Ascot Park): This is a frequent service that stops at both the Porirua Station and various points in the City Centre near Cobham Court.

  • Route 60 (Porirua – Tawa – Johnsonville): Useful for those traveling from the south.

  • Other Local Routes: Routes 210, 226, 230, and 236 also serve the Porirua City Centre area and stop near the "Porirua Centre" bus stops.
