Description

Blood Cancer NZ is the national charity dedicated to supporting patients and their families living with blood cancers (leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma, myeloproliferative neoplasms – MPNs, and myelodysplastic syndromes – MDS) and serious blood conditions.

Since 1977, our work has been made possible through our fundraising events and the generous support we receive from individuals, companies, trusts and grants. We do not receive government funding.

Patient Support

Blood Cancer NZ's Support Services provide personalised support programmes for patients and their families. This can include regular visits, phone or email contact, as well as face-to-face education. We run a number of support programmes, including Kids' Club – a group held both online and in-person in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch to support children who have a family member with blood cancer.

We also provide a toll-free number for advice, empathy and support.

Research

We contribute over $500,000 each year to cancer research. This includes supporting the research at the Blood Cancer NZ Research Unit at the University of Auckland, funding independent blood cancer research projects, funding for those going through CAR T-cell trials through the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research, travel grants, summer studentships and PhD scholarships.

Information

We provide the latest information for patients, families, health professionals and communities to improve understanding about blood cancers and conditions.

Blood Cancer NZ produces a number of disease-specific information booklets, including picture books written especially for children who have been diagnosed with a blood cancer or have had a family member diagnosed.

Awareness

We work to increase public knowledge of blood cancers and conditions. This is achieved through specifically focused campaigns for the public, health professionals and health agencies.

Advocacy

We represent the needs of patients and their families to the government, related agencies and other relevant organisations.

Blood Cancer NZ provides services and support throughout the country. Every person’s experience of living with a blood cancer or condition is different. Living with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood condition is not easy, but you don’t have to do it alone.
