Description

SafeMan SafeFamily helps men choose a safer, better life.
It is about a man doing his own hard work so he can become a Safe Man and create a Safe Family.

We support men to stop violence in their lives. The journey takes time and can change not only a man’s life but his whole whānau forever. Men learn new skills to build healthy relationships and leave a positive legacy for their children, whānau, and community.

Our service is peer-led. This means many of our workers are men who have been violent in the past but have made big changes in their own lives. They now help other men do the same. Our peers are supported by trained professionals.

We work in many ways — online, in person, 1-1 or in groups and out in the community across Aotearoa. Our team goes to places where men are: workplaces, clubs, marae, gang spaces, and community events, meeting men where they are and offering support.

Men in our programme follow a simple pathway:

  • Uncover – understand their past and why violence happened
  • Discover – learn new skills and safer ways to cope
  • Recover – practise these skills and make real, lasting changes
  • Thrive – live a safer, healthier life and celebrate progress

SafeMan SafeFamily walks alongside men for as long as they need. Anyone can reach out for help.

SafeMan SafeFamily Programme

The SafeMan SafeFamily programme is built on a peer-to-peer network of ‘Safe Men’ – former men and woman who have used violence and who have been on a journey of recovery from lives of violence, and are now “safe”. They play a mentoring role, providing outreach and engagement, and ongoing coaching and support, similar to the 12-step AA model. We support men to stop violence in their lives.
