Description

The Helensville District Health Trust (HDHT) is a charitable trust which is well respected for its innovative and enterprising integrated rural health model.

Its vision is "the best possible health services for the people of South Kaipara."

The Trust was formed in 1989 in response to the impending closure of Helensville's local maternity hospital. The community-led initiative pioneered New Zealand's first Birthing Unit, which remains at the forefront of maternity care in this country and around the world.

Since 2013 HDHT has also been a part shareholder of the Kaipara Medical Centre along with Waitemata District Health Board and long-serving local doctors.

The Trust's impact on the health and wellbeing of the community grew again in 2015 when it was gifted the old Parakai Tavern and redeveloped the site into Te Whare Oranga ō Parakai. The community centre, with a commercial grade kitchen, plays host to a number of events and educational courses and acts as a "house of well-being" for the people of South Kaipara.
