Molars (teeth at the back of the mouth used for chewing) often have deep grooves or fissures. These can be difficult to clean and food particles can be trapped here. Bacteria may grow and release acids that can decay this tooth surface. Your dentist can apply a fluoride releasing protective plastic covering (sealant) to these fissures to help prevent tooth decay.
