Registration and qualifications

Registration

All practising dentists, dental specialists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons must be registered with the Dental Council of New Zealand (DCNZ) and have an annual practising certificate. To be registered they must hold an appropriate qualification, be competent in a “scope of practice” that will describe what they are entitled to do and be fit for registration according to the rules of the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 (HPCAA). Qualifications

Dentist:
Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) University of Otago or equivalent. For more detailed information view the Dental Council of New Zealand website.

Dental Specialists:
Dental specialists have undergone specialist training and completed qualifications in addition to their dentistry degree. For more detailed information on specialist dental qualifications please view the Dental Council of New Zealand website.
